KelTech IoT wins Free Electrons – The Global Energy Startup Program

November 11th, 2021 – KelTech IoT has been chosen as overall winner of Free Electrons – the most dynamic startup program in the energy sector worldwide, with almost 3,100 start-ups from almost 100 countries applying.

Climate Change is the challenge of our generation and the energy sector is at the heart of achieving the goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. For this to happen, significant change must happen in the form of decarbonisation, digitalisation and decentralisation.

For the last 6 months, KelTech IoT, along with the other start-up finalists collaborated closely with the nine energy utility partners, under the Free Electrons program, to find solutions for accelerating this journey of change.

KelTech IoT’s Dual Distributed Network (DDN) Solution won worldwide acclaim from the utilities for its truly transformative technology, which enables a completely new architecture for the generation, distribution and consumption of energy. By combining energy and data in a single cable solution, a low-voltage direct current (LVDC) microgrid can be deployed in a cost effective, sustainable and resilient way.

Commenting on the win, Leo Clancy, CEO of Enterprise Ireland said “I am delighted to see an Irish startup winning the Free Electrons Program for 2021. As COP26 draws to a close, we are all more acutely aware of the goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and electrification is at the core of making this happen. As a participant in Enterprise Ireland’s High Potential Start-Up (HPSU) program, KelTech IoT is a great example of an Irish company taking on this massive challenge, delivering practical solutions and real impact today for a more sustainable and greener world tomorrow.”

John McKiernan, Head of Innovation Pipeline at ESB, co-founders of Free Electrons and host company for the Grand Finale this week said “The Free Electrons holds a special place in my heart. Founded in 2017, we have seen some wonderful collaborations emerge and develop between utilities and start-ups on a global scale. Our energy sector is on an exciting journey of transformational change with companies like KelTech IoT providing truly innovative solutions to help accelerate this change. Again, my congratulations to KelTech IoT on their massive win and to the other 14 finalists in this year’s program.”

Commenting on the win, Mark Kellett, CEO of KelTech IoT said “We are incredibly proud to win this year’s Free Electrons program and become the first Irish start-up to do so. The last 6 months has been an extremely productive and beneficial period for us and we’d like to thank all the utilities for their support and vote of confidence in our technology. This is merely the ‘end of the beginning’, as we look forward to further collaborations on the adoption of our solution”.

Mark added “Our DDN Solution is a truly disruptive and transformative technology for the energy sector and beyond. The essence of what we are about can be captured in our company vision – ‘innovating to provide smart solutions for connecting & powering a sustainable world’”.

KelTech IoT has ambitious plans in place, to grow its R&D capability in Ireland and to continue market penetration and customer growth in North America, Australia, the UK and Ireland.

The Free Electrons platform is a global energy consortium composed of partners American Electric Power (USA), AusNet Services (Australia), CLP (Hong Kong, China), DEWA – Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dubai), EDP – Energias de Portugal (Portugal), E.ON (Germany), ESB – Electricity Supply Board (Ireland), Origin Energy (Australia) and SP Group (Singapore). In 2021, it entered its fifth edition backed by proven results over time in terms of pilots (+10M USD, and increasing), deployments (~20M USD), direct investment (+20M USD) and deals (50M USD).
